Dimitar Dimitrov was born in 1963 in the city of Yambol. In 1988, he graduated with a degree in "Economics and Industrial Management" from the Karl Marx Higher Institute of Economics (today the UNWE), and a few years later he was appointed as an assistant professor in the Department of "National and Regional Security" (1994). Two years later, he was elected as the scientific secretary of the department, and in 2007 he was elected as its head. In the period 2015 - 2019, he held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Economics of Infrastructure.

He has specialized in the field of defence and security economics. Prof. Dimitrov has several long-term specializations – in Groningen (Netherlands), Bonn (Germany) and Monterey (USA), as well as short-term ones – in Munich, Brussels, Geneva, Antwerp, Stockholm, Seattle, Vienna, Marrakech, etc. In 2015 he was a visiting researcher at the Center for Nonproliferation Studies, MIIS in Monterey, USA.

He is a member of the network of experts of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

He is the author/co-author of a total of 104 publications, 26 of which are in English. Among his publications are 16 monographs and 4 textbooks. He has publications in the Netherlands, Germany, the USA and the UK, published by Nomos Verlag, Frank Cass and Routledge.

He deliver lectures in "Economic Analysis in Defence and Security" and "Current challenges to Defence and Security".

Prof. Dimitrov has participated in a number of national and international research projects on issues of defence budgeting, transparency and accountability of defence spending, the defence industry, modernization of the armed forces, economic aspects of terrorism, scenario planning in defence and security, etc.

Prof. Dimitar Dimitrov has been the Rector of the UNWE since December 2019. He is Co-Chair of SDSN Bulgaria.

He speaks English and Russian, and uses German.
