In early December, Prof. Dr. Svetoslav Spassov, Head of the International Master's Program in Nuclear Security and Director of the Nuclear Security Support Center, took part in the International Conference International Conference on Nuclear and Radiological Emergencies: Building the Future in an Evolving World, of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), held in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Prof. Spassov presented a poster within the framework of the official poster exhibition. The presented poster was dedicated to the challenges facing the framework for preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological emergencies related to small modular reactor (SMR) technologies. The presentation focused on key aspects such as stakeholder engagement, public acceptance, capacity building, cybersecurity, use of artificial intelligence and innovative technologies for physical protection of SMRs.
During the forum, Prof. Spasov also held working meetings with the IAEA leadership, including the Agency's Deputy Director General Karin Ervio and the Director of the Nuclear Security Directorate Elena Buglova. During the talks, issues related to the development of international cooperation in the field of nuclear security, the role of universities in building expert capacity, and future initiatives in the field of education and training were discussed.
Prof. Spassov's participation in the conference reinforces the active role of the UNWE, the DNRS, and the Nuclear Security Support Center in the international dialogue on issues of nuclear and radiological safety and security, as well as the university's long-standing cooperation with the IAEA.
